CHIAWA & OLD MONDORO, LOWER ZAMBEZI
The Cumings Family own and run what is acknowledged by many to be one of Africa’s very finest safari operations with their two sensational camps Chiawa and Old Mondoro in Zambia’s incredible Lower Zambezi National Park.
Set on the banks of the Zambezi River, under a grove of evergreen Mahogany trees, Chiawa Camp blends effortlessly with its idyllic surroundings and provides a retreat which guests are invited to make their own. Here you will receive the warmest of welcomes and biggest of smiles and can relax and just enjoy the personalised service, fabulous cuisine and luxury accommodation, all in a beautiful setting with leopards, lions, elephants, hippos and other wildlife as your neighbours.
They have nine luxury safari tents, all with timber floors, king-size beds, Egyptian linen, roll top baths and outdoor showers complete with Molton Brown toiletries and private verandas. This is bush-luxury at its very finest, offering classic unpretentious luxury which is totally appropriate to the ethos of Chiawa and the environment it strives to protect.
An hour down river at Old Mondoro, the concept is simple, to provide guests with an authentic, intimate safari that concentrates on the wildlife and bush experience whilst not forgoing any creature comforts or service. Overlooking a maze of hippo-inhabited islands from a grove of Acacia trees; this is perhaps the most beautiful site in the Lower Zambezi National Park and certainly one of the most remote.
With only 8 beds, Old Mondoro is the Park’s most intimate and private safari camp, exuding charm and charisma like nowhere else. Appropriately constructed of canvas and natural materials, it has an open and adventurous feel and you are aware that if you sit quietly much of the action will happen right in front of you.
At both camps it is all about the wildlife, the bush and the river. An impressive variety of safari activities are available, led by their award winning team of Africa-born guides who have an unmatched fleet of vehicles, boats and canoes at their disposal, for which this safari operation has become world-renowned.
Whilst the luxuries and bush-sophistication of Chiawa Camp are undeniably appealing, guests will also enjoy the "back to the bush" atmosphere of Old Mondoro, so combining these two camps makes for the most rewarding visit to the Lower Zambezi.
