NORMAN CARR SAFARIS
The late Norman Carr started the first safari company in the Luangwa Valley back in 1950 and now, more than 60 years on Norman Carr Safaris are still leading the way in Zambian wildlife safaris. They are still passionate about sharing the thrill of tracking lions on foot through the early morning mists, the delight of learning something new on every walk or game drive and the chance to meet local people and share their experiences about life in the valley.
They have five camps throughout the valley, all with their own distinctive design and location, which offer guests the choice of combining a luxury safari lodge with a selection of the very best Zambian Bush camps. Four of these camps are situated along the course of the Luwi River and allow guests the unique experience of being able to walk from camp to camp in the style of the first pioneers.
Kapani Lodge, a permanent lodge situated on the banks of the Luangwa River, is the ideal place to start your safari experience and to enjoy night drives, community visits and game drives. The eight spacious en-suite rooms are beautifully appointed and the lodge has a wonderful thatched central area for guests to socialise and share stories. They also have a private lagoon house which is ideal for families. Prices start from £238 per person per night including full board, transfers and game drives and Park Entry Fees.
Luwi Bush Camp is a seasonal camp nestled under huge mahogany trees on the banks of a private lagoon, deep in the heart of the National Park. The wildlife here is prolific and being able to track it on foot each day is a memory that will last a lifetime. Accommodation is in four cleverly designed grass huts that have been built using the natural contours of the trees and natural vegetation wherever possible, meaning they blend into this amazing setting and give the camp a rustic appeal.
Three hours walk from Luwi you find Nsolo Bush Camp, a stunning camp on the bend of the river. Four individually designed chalets have been set on raised wooden decks with high thatched roofs and private verandas offering excellent wildlife spotting opportunities. Various lion prides overlap along the riverbed and few African experiences are more exciting than heading out on a walking safari early in the morning, having heard lions calling through the night, finding fresh tracks and following them up on foot.
Where the Luwi River meets the mighty Luangwa you find Kakuli Camp, perched on the riverbank with commanding views of the wildlife below. For many this camp marks the end of the walking safari and is a lovely restful camp with four spacious traditional safari tents under shady thatched roofs and open-air bathrooms. The central bar has been built on a deck overlooking the converging rivers and it the perfect spot for sundowners and watching the wildlife meander by. Prices start from £337 per person per night at the bush camps and include full board, drinks, game drives, transfers and Park Entry Fees.
Just along the river, shaded by a grove of huge Ebony trees is Mchenja, a luxury camp that effortlessly blends exquisite design and high levels of service with a wonderfully rustic setting. The five stylish tents are strung along the river with their own viewing decks, candlelit bathrooms and outdoor showers. This camp can be combined with the walking safaris or for guests looking for a little more comfort and pampering we would recommend a longer stay here as the area is teeming with wildlife. Prices start from £405 per person per night and include full board, drinks, game drives, transfers and Park Entry Fees.
